Athletics Wellington realises how important coaches are to our sport. We want to encourage more people into coaching and to grow coaches' knowledge aligned to the community they are coaching in whether it's at grassroots, development or performance level.
We would also like to raise the profile and recognition of our coaches as they are essential to the development of our athletes at all levels.
Our focus is on providing formal and informal coach development courses at the community and development level. We partner with Athletics NZ to ensure we provide opportunities for our performance level coaches. And we work with clubs to provide grassroots coach development courses specifically for parents and volunteers who help out on club nights.
At junior level we provide coaching sessions immediately after our junior interclubs for athletes aged 11 to 15 years of age. The aim is to provide training opportunities for those athletes who want to work towards making the Wellington age-grade interprovincial teams.
At the same time it provides an opportunity to upskill club coaches, with the sessions doubling up as learning opportunities for coaches as well as athletes. By observing these coaching sessions they can then take this knowledge back to their clubs to benefit their athletes.
