Athletics Wellington Winter Series Championship 2024
The Athletics Wellington Winter Series Championship is competed for over six [6] races with athletes best four [4] scoring events counting to their individual total in the series. Points Scoring Events eligible are 

  • Shaw Baton Relay
  • University Cross Country Relay
  • Vosseler Shield
  • Dorne Cup
  • Wellington Cross Country Championships
  • Wellington 5km Road Championships

Wellington 10km Road Championships ( Under 20 grade an above only) 

WINTER SERIES POINTS  
Championship medals are awarded to the top 3 overall in each grade, of the series after the points are aggregated from the best 5 races (except Under 18 it will be 4 events) out of the 7 events by an athlete. Points are awarded to 1st place in a grade receives 100 points, 2nd 99 points, 3rd in each 98 points, 4th 97 points  until all athletes awarded points up to a maximum of 100th place.

Winter Series Championship places are determined by an athlete’s accumulated points. Therefore, to place in the medals, an athlete would likely need to compete in all 4 of the seven possible races in order to accumulate enough points.

In the event there is a tie on points for any athletes in a grade with their points from the best score  of 4 races then the countback will be the higher placed athletes in the Road Championships.  

  • For seniors and masters, an athlete’s age on the day of the Vosseler is used to determine their grade for the two relays.
  • For seniors and masters, an athlete’s age on the day of the Vosseler is used to determine their grade for the two relays.
  • For seniors and masters, an athlete’s age on the day of the Vosseler, Dorne, XC Champs and Road Champs will determine their grade for points from those races. For example, if an athlete turns 50 between the Dorne and XC Champs, they will have points in the Masters 35 grade for the first 4 events, and points in the Masters 50 grade for the final 3 events.
  • However, new for 2024: an affected athlete can notify Daryl of their wish to remain in the grade they are for the Vosseler for the whole series.
    Also new for 2024: an athlete can notify Daryl (before the Vosseler) of their wish to be counted in a higher grade for the whole series (eg a master elected to remain a senior.)
  • For juniors, age as at 31 December 2024 determines their grade for the whole season
  • If an athlete is not registered in the GameDay registration database by the date of the Vosseler, they will receive no points from the Shaw Baton and University relays.

Through competing in Interclub events on the winter calendar youth, senior and masters athletes can earn selection to represent Athletics Wellington at a series of national level Championships . Athletics Wellington Teams are selected for the following Championships.

Athletes wishing to to be considered for selection must notify Selectors by making  an Expression of Interest for the desired event

A number of our clubs are involved with hosting local running events that are open to the public as well.

There are interclub cross country and road running races held throughout the season for club members of all ages.  These are held at a variety of venues around Wellington usually on Saturday afternoons.  There are races for primary, intermediate and college ages such as under 9, under 11, under 13, under 15, under 18, under 20 plus adults grades too from seniors through to masters. 

 Athletics Wellington Clubs
Cross Country and Road clubs are for all ages.  If you’re primary, intermediate or college age it’s not too early or late to start.  We have members still running into their 80s so come along and see what it’s all about.

With our harrier clubs catering for all ages and abilities, cross country is a fantastic family friendly sport.  You may want to improve your fitness for specific events, such as 5km, 10km, half marathons or marathons, or just keep fit for other sports.  Our clubs are there for everyone, young and old, fit or not so fit, super fast or super slow.  It doesn’t matter what level you are – everyone is welcome.

Training nights, club days and interclub competitions are available throughout the winter months.  Come along and give cross country and road running a go.
