Gate Access Updated:1 October ‘2024
For individual access outside times booked by Athletics Wellington during summer, users will be required to have key fob access.
This is now operated by a swipe fob to open the electronic gate.
Access outside booking times require a new electronic fob for the electronic locking system for the pedestrian gate at Newtown Park.

Electronic fobs can be purchased at the WCC Newtown Parks & Reserves Depot (located behind Newtown Park), 113 Russell Terrace, Newtown, or can be collected between the hours of 8am – 3:30pm, or from the WCC Newtown Library in Constable Street.
Swipes renewals are annual.

One of our essential safety rules is that no training is permitted anywhere within the fence surrounding the track while a scheduled meet or competition is taking place.

Role of Athletics Wellington
Formal bookings of the Newtown Park facilities are made via Wellington City Council. Athletics Wellington aims to co-ordinate summer booking requests on behalf of its Senior and Junior Track and Field committees and all affiliated clubs. This provides a single point of contact for athletics related bookings, and allows for coordination of requests between various athletics groups and activities during the season.

Athletics Wellington Booking Request  Process
For athletics-related bookings, we aim to gather and co-ordinate booking requests well in advance of the beginning of the track season, so that these can be confirmed and published with adequate notice for all parties.

All booking requests, including season competition schedules, should be provided to the Athletics Wellington office by 1 September at the latest. Note that separate booking requests can be made to wellington City Council for:

  • The Newtown Park arena  [Newtown Park # 1]
  • The Function Room
  • The Top field [Newtown Park # 2]

Note: During weekdays throughout the season, there are many bookings of the arena made directly with Wellington City Council by Primary School and College Sports organisations. Athletics Wellington aims to be aware of these bookings and to publish information as appropriate for the benefit of the athletics community.  However, the master source of booking information is the City Council – HERE

Winter Season access
The Wellington United Football Club has priority for booking requests for the arena between 1 April and 30 September. This particularly applies to weekend bookings.

Note: The arena is not always open during the winter period. Those wishing to use the facility during winter can apply to the Wellington City Council for a key to the pedestrian gate. See above.
For any use of the track facility by athletes there is an expectation that respect is shown to any other users, and recognize that priority is given to the Football club during the winter season or when designated bookings are made with WCC.
