Athletics Wellington Team Wrap from Nationals
A much scaled down size team of 53 athletes compared to almost double the team size from 2024’s home nationals in Wellington travelled to Dunedin to represent Athletics Wellington. Despite this the team managed to bring home a considerable number of medals totalling 37 medals with a split of 10 gold, 22 silvers and 5 bronze, this compared with 48 medals in 2024 and 46 medals in 2023 both in Wellington.
Stand out performers would have to be double gold medallist Joe Martin and Alexander MacBeth both taking 800m and 1500m doubles. Asher Robertson a promising decathlete, took 3 individual medals in the High jump , long jump and 300m Hurdles where he set an Athletics Wellington record.
Imogen Skelton was the only Senior athletes to claim gold in the Women’s High Jump while a Wellington record by Elizabeth Hewitt in the Women’s Hammer Throw of 57.99m added a almost a metre to her record set in February to claim 2nd behind Olympian Lauren Bruce.
