Seamus Kane dominates Wellington Roads for Winter Clean Sweep
Good fields of over 320 athletes took to the roads in Wainuiomata Regional Park in cool conditions and Wellington Scottish athlete Seamus Kane [Scottish] dominated from the start once again at the Wellington championships in the premier 10km Road race. Kane’s victory in a time of 31.32.9, took the sixth and final race of the Athletics Wellington Winter Series giving him a clean sweep across the six events during the winter. Running a personal best to finish 2nd to Kane was Callum Stewart [WHAC] 31.50.7 and clubmate Nathan Tse 32.12.3. In the Women’s race over 10km Esther George [WHAC] ran a best time of 35.32.1 in the absence of clubmate Sarah Drought who was nursing slight injury to take a deserved victory. George edged ahead over the final stages closely from Emma Perron [Scottish] who tracked her most of the race. In third was Deborah Lynch [Olympic]. In the Masters grades of the 10km events Daniel Clendon [WHAC] was first and well clear in the M35’s while Peter Stevens [Scottish] was first in for the M50 division. In the M20 race Josh Jordan [Trentham].was pleased to take a strong win over Lorcan Rabbitte [VIc Uni] winning in a time 23.56.7. In the 5km races Poppy Healy [WHAC], was a strong winner in the women’s divisions earning the W18 title in 18.25.0 ahead of Ayesha Shafi [Scottish] in 18.37.7 who claimed the W35 title. while Vicky Humphries [WHAC] claimed the W50 grade. Eliza Squire [WHAC} took the W20 title. Best male in the 5km was Max Poland [Trentham] winning the event and the M18 title in a time of 15.38.8 ahead of close rival Max Doherty and Conor Kemp both of Olympic. Paul Hewitson [WHAC] was top masters man with a time of 18.04.4 in M60. In the Men’s 16 over 3.5k it was a trifecta to the Olympic club with Logan Hopfler just heading out Desmond Reddy and Jack Gregory, with Caleb Rice [Trentham]. Equally in W16 race 3.5km Olympic pair Juliet Moorhead and Maia Holden headed Madison Wos [Trentham]. Hutt Valley Harriers youngsters, Williams brothers of Jacob and Cooper took U14 and U10 races and Emily Broster the U10 Girls. Under 12 races went to Ovin Angammana [Olympic] and Lucie Thomson [Kapiti] respectively.
