Wellington Secondary School Athletes Shine in NZL Team at Canberra
Five wellington athletes were selected to compete as part of the NZ Secondary School team competing in the Australian Championships over the weekend in Canberra at the purpose built cross country course in Stromlo Forest Park .
All five athletes of the Olympic club and John Cope coached came home with medals from the events held on Saturday and Monday .
Max Doherty on Saturday finished 12th place in the Mens Under 18 6000m race earning a team silver medal then on Monday in the Relay event he was a member of the Under 20 Men’s team that took silver in the 5 x 3000m event. The Under 20 team included Jamie Mora, Pai Wynyard, Toby Caro and Daniel Sinclair
The girls featured in Saturday individual races with Kate McHardy leading the Wellington girls home in Women Under 18 4000m race placing 6th with Ava Sutherland finishing strongly into 10th and Amy McHardy 19th . The three Wellington girls combined with Boh Ritchie and Kate Currie to take bronze in the Women Under 18, 5 x 2000m relay race on Monday. Lucy Jurke placed a creditable 16th in the Women Under 20 6000m race in the hot dry conditions. On the Monday Lucy was reserve for the relay and had the opportunity to race in the Time trial 2000m and she won gold in the Under 19 section.
