Needle Relay attracts strong team numbers as weather holds for records
The 2024 Needle relay saw 10 clubs competing, a record number of clubs. including a record number of Children’s teams. In the Open grade of Junior/Senior/Masters athletes there was the largest number of teams since 2021.
There were a number records including one new team relay record and 5 individual lap records – a sign that the weather was favourable even though breezy and before the rain. .
The Open men’s race line honours went to to Victoria University ahead of WHAC Senior Men, then WHAC Men 20 grade crossing in third spot. In the Women’s section again WHAC Senior women came through to win in 1.22.28 ahead of Olympic Junior women’s team 1.22.53 followed by Victoria University in third.
Overall fastest laps for Men went to Julian Baker WHAC for the 3km leg and Nathan Tse for WHAC over the 5km out and back lap around the bays. In the women’s section Maddison McLean ran the quickest over 3km lap towards Miramar and return with 11.14 and Maia Flint maintained her season dominance being fastest women over 5km in 18.03 ahead of Jessica McKenzie in 18.10.
Victoria University won the mixed grade in new grade record of 1:25:45
