Wellington Athletes feature strongly for medals on both days at NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country events at Barge Park Whangarei.
Wellington athletes featured strongly both days at NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country events at Barge Park Whangarei. The Day One leading Wellington results for individuals and school teams started with the Junior Girls race over 3km with Olivia Clay-McDowell (Kapiti C) claiming silver and Lucy Mabin (WGC) bronze behind winner Annie Downing (Hillcrest HS). Wellington Girls’ College with Lucy Mabin, Lucy Wilson, and Sophie Hoar, won the 3 person teams division.
A further two Wellington individual medals came In the Year 9 girls running 3km Isobel Thurston (WGC) took the gold ahead Sascha Mitchell (St Margaret’s C) and bronze went to Mia Thomson Scots College.
For the Senior Girls who ran 4km Wellington Girls’ College placed 2nd in 3-person and 1st in 6 person Teams race. The Wellington Girls’ College athletes in the teams were Annabel Tuck, Maia Holden, Juju Moorhead, Emily Eastwood, Issy De Hair, Xanthe Wong. The first Wellington senior girl home was Maddison McLean (St Mary’s College) in 18th with Annable Tuck leading her team in 22nd place.
In the boys events the Year 9’s ran 3km and Matthew Meiklejohn (St Patrick’s C Silverstream) finished second to Huw Robinson (Westlake BHS) . In Year 9 teams 6 person Wellington College finish 3rd. In the Junior boys’ event over 4km: Jack Stirling (Hamilton BHS) eclipsed by a mere 3 seconds, Jacob Williams of Hutt Valley HS who split Stirling’s with is twin brother, Max Stirling Hamilton BHS. Williams led home Hutt Valley HS 3-person team to a win for Hutt Valley High School with Leo Hyink, and Finnigan Strickland with St Patrick’s College Silverstream placing 2nd whereas in the 6 person team St Patrick’s College Silverstream took gold with Cam Starr, Fin Robinson, Bair Waldrom, Charlie Hobbs, James Wallace, Roman Summerville-Murray
The hotly contested and widely expected clash in Senior boys over 6km delivered with Caleb Wagener (Auckland GS) defeating Sam Ruthe (Tauranga BC) by 2 seconds ahead of Wellington College’s Joe Martin for bronze. Martin led home the 3-person team which included Alex MacBeth and Archie Tulloch for a team bronze.
In the Para Athlete Senior 2 km event Toby Ireland (Hutt Valley HS) placed 3rd.
On Day Two Wellington’s regional teams featured again in the 9th NZSS Regional Team Cross Country Relay Championships. In Year 9 Boys the Wellington 4-person team of Matthew Meiklejohn, Oliver Healy, Gokul Sadguna, Ovin Angammana took gold ahead of North Harbour and Waikato Bay of Plenty. The Year 9 Girls placed second for silver and in Year 9 Mixed the Wellington team finished 3rd. In the Junior Girls Wellington finished 2nd as did the Junior Boys and the Wellington Junior Mixed team of Elodie Dent, Neve Hermann, Bair Waldrom, Fin Robinson took gold. In the Senior divisions Wellington boys team finished 2nd to the strong Waikato Bop team and in the Senior Mixed Wellington placed 3rd.
