National Road Relay Successes Enjoyed by Wellington Clubs

Athletics Wellington Clubs Enjoy Successes at NZ Road Relay

On Saturday around the country roads of Feilding and Halcombe north of Palmerston North some 900 athletes in around 135 relay teams took to the roads to represent their clubs at the Geneva Wellbeing New Zealand Road Relay Championships. The Championships were held over four lap , six lap and seven lap courses in typical spring weather conditions. This event is a highlight for club activities for the winter season. 

Athletics Wellington clubs were well represented with almost (35 teams) 25% of the athletes in the competition  coming from the Wellington region.  While not taking any honours in the Senior title  races there were three clubs in the top ten Men as Scottish were 7th, Victoria University 8th and WHAC 10th.  In the Senior Women WHAC were 7th for a top ten placing .

Wellington athletes were successful in the junior [Under 20] ranks and the majority of the Masters grades.  Olympic Club were strong Under 20 winning the Men’s and runner-up in the Women’s grades

In the Masters events WHAC women took the 35+ race and Wellington Scottish defended the Masters men 50 plus title  and Wellington Harrier Athletic won the masters men 60 plus.

The top club award went to North Harbour Bays ahead of last year’s runner up in the top club competition Wellington Scottish.

Masters Open 60+; 1st Wellington Harrier Athletic Club (Paul Hewitson, David Creamer, Todd Krieble, Peter Frawley, Kelvin Wong, Ian Macfarlane)  2:25:27, 2nd Wellington Scottish 2:26:14,

Masters Open 70+; 3rd  Wellington Harrier Athletic Club 1:28:3

Boys Under16; 2nd  Trentham United 58:17,  (Non-Championships)

Trentham United took asix lap Social division race ahead of Victoria University

This annual relay event brings the season close to an end of winter events with one key Wellington Championships to go on Saturday 18th October at Mt Kaukau the Skyline Traverse will be the hosted by Olympic Club and the Wellington Mt Running Championships will  be determined
