Gualter’s National Title and Hewitt’s Wellington Record Highlight Throws Weekend
After some years the National 1000m Championship returned to Inglewood and in very good conditions Toby Gualter won his first senior National track title hot on his retuned from USA College . The former National Men 20 5km champion went to the front early in the race and dominated the terms. Virtually leading the whole way he pushed the pace and pulling away at 5k. He ran the very solid last 5k in 14:05. Gualter was delighted to gain his first senior title. His winning time of 29.08.72 was just outside his personal best of 28.57.95 set at Raleigh USA last March. Runner up was Eric Speakman 10 secs back ahead of Oska Inkster-Baynes and multi previous champion Julian Oakley .
Throwing Competitions a Plenty
Meanwhile in the Wellington Throws meetings of the Sola Power Amara meet [Fri & Sat] and the Kiwi Throwers meet [Mon], the weekend highlight was Elizabeth Hewitt in her first competition of the season since being runner up at last years Nationals surpassing her own Wellington Open Women’s Hammer record of 56.14m by throwing just over a metre further with 57.18metres.
There was excellent commaraideri at both the Sola and Kiwi meets with some particularly close competitions in events like Mens Discus at Sola Power meet between 3rd and 4th ranked NZ throwers Jade Zaia and Nathaniel Sulupo with Zaia taking the honours
