Lynch leads the way with impressive win in North Island Championships

Lynch leads way for Wellington in Taupo.

A strong performance from Susannah Lynch [Olympic Harrier & Athletic Club] was the outstanding run for the Wellington representative team at the Annual North Island Cross Country Championship state over the picturesque Spa Park in Taupo on Saturday.

She convincingly won ahead of a trio from North Harbour Bays athletes and sets herself as strong contender for the National title in Dunedin in early August.  Lynch headed an excellent contingent of over 40 club mates from Olympic who had excellent numbers at the event with a number placing highly.

Girls Under 10 Brooke Martin was one such athlete winning the 1000m youngster event, while other Olympic club athletes Nicola Hankinson took the Women’s 40-44 category, Angela Clarke was 3rd in the 50-54 grade and Tracy Berghan and Ele Brown were 2nd and 3rd in the 55-59 section and Annie Van Herck in the 70+age over 5000m.  Other well performed women from the region were Heather Walker [Wellington Scottish] winning age 50-54 section, Sue Bankier [Athletics &Cycling Masterton] , and marathon legend Katherine Switzer placing 3rd  in the 70+ section.

In the male sections Luca Evett [Wellington Harrier Athletic Club] won the Boys Under 16 title over 3000m and Jack  Hunter [Athletics Wairarapa] the Men’s Under 18 5000. Others winning their section were Michael Waterman [Olympic] Men’s 50-54 and Roger Robinson [Victoria University] in the Men’s 80+ section.

Other podium places to Wellington athlete were achieved by  Travis Welsh [Trentham United Harriers],3rd in Boys U10, Jacob Williams[Hutt Valley Harriers] 2nd Boys U12, Oliver Harland 3rd Boys U14 . In Masters section podiums went to Trent Corbett [Olympic] 3rd in 40 – 44 section, Paul Rodway [Scottish] 3rd Men 70-74.
