Melrose Shield

On Saturday the Annual Melrose Shield for relays was contested by seven clubs from across the region. Victoria University of Wellington [VUW] put up a strong defence to retain the Shield which they have had pride in holding. However a well rallied team from Olympic Harriers lead by team coach John Cope proved to be too strong on the day fielding excellent Senior Mens and Junior Women’s teams to take the shield for 2023 ahead of VuW and Wellington Scottish. It was good to see a strong sprint team from Paraparaumu in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m and Wellington Athletics Harrier Club taking the Distance Medley. Kiwi and Titahi Bay fielded teams in the Throws relay.

After the meet the  Melrose Shield, which was presented to the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in 1948 by the late A (Bill) Melrose for interclub competition for relay races and teams’ events, was presented by Bill Melrose’s daughter-in-law, Dawn Melrose a long serving and prominent Athletics Wellington  official, to two young Olympic club team members
