In conjunction with the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association, Athletics Wellington is hosting the NZ Secondary School Track, Field and Road Race Championships in Wellington this year from 6-8 December.  The main track and field events will be at Newtown Park. This will be a large event, with around 2,000 secondary school athletes from all around the country.

This will be a great experience for athletes, and for all those involved in supporting the event.

To ensure the successful running of this event, we need a large number of volunteers and athletics officials.

Call for trainee officials

We will need to provide a considerable number of officials to help ensure that this competition is run in accordance with best practice and meets national athletics standards.  Additional officials will be needed to supplement our existing pool of officials, and those travelling to Wellington from other regions.

We are keen to hear from people who are interested in getting some initial training and experience as a trainee athletics official. This is a great opportunity to receive top quality training and to put it into practice in a large athletics meet.

We have arranged a programme of four training seminars in August and September in preparation for the NZSSAA champs in December. The training dates are:

  • 28 August
  • 4 September
  • 11 September
  • 18 September

Details of training topics, venues and times are given here:  http://athleticswellington.org.nz/officials/

We hope that those interested in becoming an athletics official will be able to attend all of the training seminars. If you complete all four, you will receive a formal qualification as an athletics official.

Anybody from age 17 and above can attend these training seminars. We will provide light refreshments and snacks at all the training seminars.

If you are interested in attending training towards becoming an official and supporting the NZSSAA event in December, please email Vaughan Oates, our Senior Technical Official, at: v.oates@gns.cri.nz

Call for volunteers

Because of the size of this event, we need a large number of volunteers to help us run the event.  Helpers are needed for a wide range of tasks including:

  • Assistance in the competition arena at the jump pits, throwing events, setting up hurdles and start blocks on the track, finish line duties, and ferrying athlete gear bags from start to finish line
  • Carrying results sheets from field event stations to the results management area
  • Assistance with traffic management immediately outside the stadium, entry gate supervision

If you are interested in volunteering to support this event, please complete a brief registration form at this link:  Volunteer registration
