Athletics Wellington set to host New Zealand’s best at Newtown Park
Athletics New Zealand are delighted to announce Newtown Park, Wellington will host the 2023 and 2024 New Zealand Track & Field Championships.
One of Aotearoa’s more pre-eminent athletics venues has staged our marquee event on eight previous occasions over the past 50 years most recently in 2015. Newtown Park also annually hosts the Team Ledger Harcourts Capital Classic – one of the leading one-day meets during the track and field season.
Centrally located in New Zealand, Wellington is easily accessible for many and the city also offers an attractive range of accommodation and entertainment options.
Next year athletes will be striving to use the New Zealand Track & Field Championships as a springboard for qualification for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris. In 2024 the French capital will once again be the goal as athletes pursue a ticket for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Athletics NZ CEO Peter Pfitzinger said: “We are pleased to return to Wellington as host of our annual track and field championships for the next two years. The venue is one of the finest in New Zealand and will provide an ideal opportunity for athletes to produce their best possible performances with some aiming for success at major championship events. Spectators will also enjoy the intimate atmosphere generated at Newtown Park and we look forward to witnessing many special performances in 2023 and 2024.”
Wellington Mayor Andy Foster said of the announcement: “Hosting the New Zealand Track and Field’s Championships in the capital for two years is a reflection of our excellent facilities at Newtown Park. Wellington is an easy place to get to, with great cafes and the city’s attractions. We hope you take the time to check out Te Papa, Zealandia and take a walk around Wellington’s waterfront.”
Athletics Wellington General Manager Tony Rogers was similarly excited and said: “For Newtown Park to stage the next two editions of the New Zealand Track & Field Championships is a great opportunity to enhance growth and development for our athletes, officials and coaches and strengthen community relationships.”
The 2023 New Zealand Track & Field Championship will either be a four-day or three-day event hosted on Thursday to Sunday 2-5 March or Friday to Sunday 3-5 March.
