Olympians Claim Major Award Honours
Athletics Wellington’s Olympians repeat their 2023 efforts being named Athlete of the Year for the 2024 Awards last evening at the Petone Club in Lower Hutt.
Athletes of all ages across all disciplines along with coaches, officials and volunteers were recognised at the evening function celebrating the Year of 2024.
James Preston and Maia Ramsden, Wellington’s two middle distance Olympians again took the honours as top male and female athletes from the region. Both athletes continued their stellar 2023 years by claiming National records to cement spots at the 2024 Paris Olympic over the 800 metres and 1500 metres respectively. Preston broke the long standing 62 year old record of Sir Peter Snell while Ramsden clinched Nikki Hamblin’s record along with an impressive double of NCAA titles with an NCAA Indoor mile title. then repeating for a2nd a consecutive the NCAA 1500m outdoor title.
Preston was on hand to receive is award and take part in a Q & A session with commentator Mark Rosanowski, while Ramsden completed a pre-record interview earlier that day with Rosanowski which was played to the Awards attendees.
